County Kerry, located in the southwest of Ireland, is the country’s most westerly county, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Covering an area of 4,807 square kilometres, it is the fifth largest county in Ireland. Kerry is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, including the famous Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula, and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range, which features Carrauntoohil, the highest peak in Ireland.

The Skellig Islands, particularly Skellig Michael, hold a fascinating history. Skellig Michael, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was once a remote monastic settlement dating back to the 6th century. The monks built beehive-shaped huts and lived in isolation, enduring harsh conditions. In 2015, Skellig Michael gained international fame as the location of Luke Skywalker’s hideout in two Star Wars movies, leading to a surge in tourism.

Kerry has a population of over 156,000 people. The county’s economy is diverse, with employment in tourism, agriculture, fishing, and services. The rise of remote working has also been notable, with over 17,000 people working from home at least part-time.

Kerry boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times. It is home to numerous archaeological sites, including ring forts, standing stones, and early Christian monastic settlements. The county played a significant role in Irish history, particularly during the medieval period and the Irish War of Independence.

Kerry also has a strong connection to polar exploration, thanks to Tom Crean, one of Ireland’s most famous Antarctic explorers, who was born in Annascaul. Crean participated in three major expeditions to Antarctica in the early 20th century, including those led by Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton. His bravery and endurance under extreme conditions have made him a legend in the history of polar exploration. After his adventures, Tom Crean returned to Annascaul and opened a pub called the South Pole Inn, which still operates today. The pub is filled with memorabilia from his expeditions and serves as a tribute to his incredible life.
